We couldn’t wait to set the world ablaze
To finish with yesterday before tomorrow arrives
Seldom pausing to savor and gaze
Just rushing on madly like bees from their hives.
We sought after riches, we hungered for praise
Chased the illusions for which everyone strives
We wept at the failures, we cursed the delays
Suffered the sorrows that cruel fate contrives.
The past’s brilliant colors have faded to grays
And now we look inward to see if hope thrives
If the song in our hearts still lingers and stays
If some of that young exuberance survives.
If only we could recapture those long ago days
Before we were husbands, before we were wives
When our future still lay in mysterious haze
Surely that was the time of our lives.
